Proctor, Daniel

Daniel Proctor was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania around 1833. He enlisted as a private in company F of the 25th United States Colored Troops Regiment on January 21, 1864 at thirty- one years old in Reading, Pennsylvania for a three-year term. The official records described Proctor as being about five feet and five inches tall with black hair and a dark complexion. The 25th USCT organized its regiments in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from January 3 to February 12, 1864. The regiment spent a great deal of its initial service in Louisiana defending New Orleans before six companies transferred to garrison duty at the Post of Barrancas, Florida and four other companies left for Fort Pickens in Pensacola, Florida, where they remained until December 1865. The army discharged Proctor from DeCamp U.S.A. General Hospital in David’s Island, New York because of disability on September 19, 1865, but the rest of the regiment did not muster out until December 6, 1865. He was buried in Lost Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Pennsylvania. (By Brenna McKelvey)
