Casey, Stephen

Stephen Casey was a private in Company I of the 6th United States Colored Troops Regiment during the Civil War. The 6th USCT formed at Camp William Penn in Chelten Hills, Pennsylvania from July 28 to September 12, 1863 and trained there before moving to Fort Monroe in Virginia on October 14. The regiment participated in the siege of Petersburg in June 1864 before fighting in the Battle of Chaffin’s Farm (New Market Heights) in September. The regiment took an extensive part in the Union Army’s expeditions into North Carolina in 1864 as the soldiers were part of the capture of Fort Fischer on January 14, 1865 as well as the capture of Wilmington in February and the occupation of Raleigh in April. The 6th USCT was present for the surrender of Confederate General Joseph Johnston’s army and remained on duty in North Carolina until the regiment mustered out on September 20, 1865. Casey was buried in Southside Cemetery in Pennsylvania. (By Brenna McKelvey)
