William Cuff served in the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in Company H as a private. A farmer before enlisting, Cuff joined the United States Colored Troops on June 10, 1863 in Readville, Massachusetts. The 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry broke camp on July 21, 1863 and embarked to South Carolina. Over the course of four months, the regiment fought in three battles. Cuff was mustered out of service on August 29, 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina. While the date of his death is uncertain, Cuff was buried at Zion Union Cemetery in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania.
