Since being pushed out of Naples the dispirited Bourbon army had been rebuilt at Capua and was ready to make a last effort to stop Garibaldi and restore the kingdom. Over three days, in the largest battle they had fought, Garibaldi and his men engaged the royal general Giosuè Ritucci and his columns on the Volturno River in Campania. After initial setbacks, Garibaldi's men pushed back the royalists and the arrival of Piemontese reinforcements decided the battle. (By John Osborne)
