Samuel Gardner was born in Wilmington, North Carolina around 1825 and served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. According to his service records, Gardner worked as a carpenter before he joined Company G of the 27th USCT in Cleveland, Ohio on February 15, 1865.
