An estimated 12,000 members of New York City's Republican "Wide-Awake" clubs, together with representatives from across the river in New Jersey and with brass bands at their head, held a massive evening demonstration and parade through Manhattan. The marchers were dressed in the typical para-military uniform of caps and capes and carried flaming torches and reportedly took two hours to pass. The parade proceeded down Fifth Avenue and onto Broadway, ending at City Hall Park. (By John Osborne)
