In New Zealand, British forces defeat Maori at the Battle of Mohoetahi

In yet another skirmish is the continuing Taranaki War in New Zealand between British settlers and indigenous Maoris, 1000 European troops led by Major General Thomas Platt defeated a small entrenched force of Maori warriors at Mohoetahi.  British casualties were light while native casualties were heavy.  The conflict continued until March 1861 although hostilities flared up again between 1863 and 1865.  (By John Osborne)
