In Philadelphia, the empty Girard House Hotel becomes a giant army uniform factory

Governor Curtin commandeered the empty Girard House Hotel in the center of Philadelphia as a military depot a few days before. It opened primarily as a great uniform sewing factory.  On the first day, large numbers of Philadelphia working women were employed, including two hundred cutters and enough seamstresses to sew a thousand uniforms a day.  Three days later, two thousand people were at work there.
