CARTER COUNTY, situated near the northeast comer of Tennessee. Area, 540 square miles. Face of the country mountainous and hilly; soil generally sterile, but in some places good. Seat of justice, Elizabethtown. Pop. in 1820, 4,835; in 1830, 6,418; in 1840, 5,237; in 1850, 6,296.
