GEORGETOWN DISTRICT, situated on the eastern boundary of South Carolina, with Atlantic ocean on the southeast, and Santee river on the southwest. Area, 1,040 square miles. Face of the country level, and toward the coast, swampy soil of middling quality. Seat of justice, Georgetown. Pop. in 1810, 15,679; in 1820, 17,603; in 1830, 19,943; in 1840, 18,274; in 1850, 20,647.
