CORTLAND COUNTY, situated southwest of the central part of New York, and traversed by Toughnioga river. Area, 500 square miles. Face of the country hilly; soil productive well watered and wooded. Seat of justice, Cortland. Pop. in 1820, 16,507; in 1830, 23,791; in 1840, 24,607; in 1850, 25,140.
