In Russia, authorities reopen the University of St. Petersburg, shut down earlier by student riots

Earlier in the month, students at the Russia's University of St. Petersburg, demanding reform and upset with government plans to restrict entry to the institution by raising fees, had demonstrated and rioted when met with military force. Serious violence was narrowly avoided and no serious casualties were reported. The university had been closed since and authorities reopened it after a two week shutdown.  (By John Osborne)
