The Great Western Sanitary Fair opens in Cincinnati, Ohio

The Great Western Sanitary Fair, designed as with all such events to raise money for the Sanitation Commission's efforts on behalf of Union troops, opened with great fanfare at the Mozart Hall in Cincinnati, with General William S. Rosecrans in the chair.  The Fair remained open until April 1864, and raised more than $235,000 for the cause. (By John Osborne)
