In Connecticut, the new Travellers' Insurance Company sells the country's first travel insurance policy

The newly established Travellers' Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut issued its first official insurance policy designed specifically for travel accidents. Casualty insurance was not new but coverage for travel was. James Patterson had seen the idea work in the England and helped found the company the previous year.  Just over ten years later, the Travellers' sold in 1875 alone, 396,164 policies and paid out $283,738 in claims.
