After nine months of bloody attempts, the Union Army marches into Petersburg, Virginia

After an encirclement lasting more than nine months and costing an estimated total casualty list of more than 70,000 Americans, killed, wounded, and captured, the Union Army finally marched into to Petersburg, Virginia.  The Confederates had similarly abandoned nearby Richmond overnight. and the war in Virginia was rapidly coming to an end.  (By John Osborne)
