A Sunday afternoon near the Battery in Charleston, South Carolina became the scene of a nasty race riot after groups of black males clashed with whites and bricks were thrown. A U.S. Army Provost tried to intervene but before order was restored, one white man had reportedly died and dozens of others of both races were injured. (By John Osborne)
