A powerful hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico struck the coast of Louisiana. Damage included several lighthouses near the shore. The Southwest Reef Lighthouse, on a platform at the head of the Atchafalaya Bay, near Berwick, Louisiana was heavily damaged and the Shell Keys Lighthouse south of Marsh Island, Louisiana was completely swept away and its lighthouse keeper presumed drowned.
