Union Army hero Joshua Chamberlain won the second of his four one year terms as governor of Maine with a victory over the man he faced in three of the first four of these contests, Democrat Eben F. Pillsbury. Chamberlain had won the year before with more that 62% of the vote; his 1867 victory was narrower, but still with a ten percent advantage. Chamberlain more easily beat Pillsbury again in 1868 and then defeated Democrat Franklin Smith in 1869 before retiring from state politics to return to his teaching post at Bowdoin College.
