President Emory
Sir
I promised to put forth my best efforts to raise money for the erection of a New Hall as yet I have called on no person for money, simply because I did not consider myself properly authorized for a collector. I expected to receive from you or some person duly appointed, by the B.L.S for the purpose of giving credentials to each member.
I subscribed one hundred & fifty dollars, which at that time I thought I could raises, but now think it rather doubtful: the unfortunate riot in which Proff McClintock is charged of having taken part, will operate against us for a time, but doubtless will pass over when the particulars are more definitely explained.
Your honour will confer a favour by sending me a certificate as a guarantee to those on whom I may call for money, that I am a legally authorized agent for the collection of said money. As I wish to go at it in haste.
Your with sincere respect
Thomas W. Smith
