SALEM COUNTY, situated at the southwesterly corner of New Jersey, with Delaware bay and Delaware river on the southwest and northwest. Area, 320 square miles. Face of the country, level; soil, sandy but productive. Seat of justice, Salem. Pop. in 1810, 12,761; in 1820, 14,022; in 1830, 14,155; in 1840, 16,024; in 1850, 19,467. (Fanning's, 1853)
