“Is it Peace or War?,” New York Times, June 12, 1858
This article reports on the arrival of the new Territorial Governor of Utah, Alfred E. Cumming, to Salt Lake City.  Appointed in 1857 by President James Buchanan, Cumming’s service in Utah had been delayed by an extended and sometimes bloody crisis between Mormons in the territory and the federal government.  However, the transfer of power between Brigham Young, the former governor, and the territory’s first non-Mormon governor proceeded without violence.
