CHARLESTON DISTRICT, situated on the southeast boundary of South Carolina, on the Atlantic ocean, with Santee river on the northeast, and Combatree river on the southwest. Area, 2,244 square miles. Face of the country generally level; soil, in parts highly productive, while in others it is marshy or sandy. Seat of justice, Charleston. Pop. in 1820, 80,212; in 1830, 86,338; in 1840, 82,661; in 1850, 72,805.
