Havelock Ellis, pioneer sexologist, is born in England

Havelock Ellis, the famous and influential physician and sexologist, was born in Croydon in Surrey the son of a sea captain.  After training as a doctor, he became notorious for his willingness to violate Victorian taboos and discuss sex openly in public and the academy.  His most influential work was Studies in the Psychology of Sex, published between 1897 and 1928.  He died in July 1939 in Suffolk in eastern England.  (By John Osborne)
