Henrik Ibsen founds the Norwegian Society aimed at the cultural independence of Norway's arts

Henrik Ibsen, then thirty-one years old, organized  the Norwegian Society to rid Norway's theater of what he saw as an overbearing Danish influence.  Ibsen was expressing the wider Norwegian cultural nationalism of the time. (By John Osborne)
