BURKE COUNTY, in the western part of North Carolina, and traversed by Catawba river. Length, 6O miles; mean width, 22, with an area of 1,320 square miles. The surface is mountainous and hilly; soil varied. Seat of justice, Morgantown. Pop. in 1820, 13,411; in 1830, 17,727; in 1840, 15,799; in 1850, 7,772.
