Samuel Elliot was a member of the 36th Regiment 7th Pennsylvania Volunteer Corps in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was captured during the Battle of Wilderness on May 5-7, 1864 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Elliot’s prison diary entry on September 14, 1864 described his journey from Andersonville, Georgia to Florence, South Carolina and arrival at the next prison camp in the Florence Stockade.
