Samuel Elliot was a member of the 36th Regiment 7th Pennsylvania Volunteer Corps in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was captured during the Battle of Wilderness on May 5-7, 1864 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Elliot’s prison diary entry from the Confederate prison at Andersonville, Georgia on September 4, 1864 was written after the funeral of a friend and described the massive amount of deaths that occurred at the camp.
