John James Audubon to Spencer Fullerton Baird, June 13, 1840

John James Audubon, circa 1850, detail
Ornithologist John Audubon encouragingly replied to seventeen-year-old Spencer Baird's letter that described a new species of fly catcher. Audubon agreed with Baird's conclusion that his specimen was a undiscovered kind of bird and praised his assiduous documentation of the specimen. Baird's skill caused Audubon to declare that "an old head may from time to time be found on young shoulders." (By Rebecca Solnit)
