Abraham Lincoln to Thomas Corwin, October 9, 1859

Thomas Corwin, detail
This revealing political letter from Abraham Lincoln to Ohio Republican Thomas Corwin explains in careful detail why Lincoln believed that slavery was "the living issue of the day" and how the Republicans needed to be careful in the months before the 1860 election to maintain their position as an anti-slavery party. This document does not appear in Lincoln's Collected Works because it was only made public in 2004. Page images are available online at the Papers of Abraham Lincoln. (By Matthew Pinsker)
