On a fine summer evening, the large Philadelphia rowing clubs assembled their boats on the Schuylkill River at Philadelphia, across from Fairmount Park, for a public "review and regatta."  Known locally as "the Schuylkill Navy," this was the first time since the outbreak of the Civil War, more than four years before, that the boats of the clubs had assembled.
