Carlotta De Berg, celebrated equestrienne circus performer, makes her American debut in New York City

English-born Carlotta De Berg had married Scottish rider James Cooke in 1860 while they were still teenagers and both had appeared in the Cirque Napoleon in Paris. Carlotta made her New York debut on this day and she and her husband moved to the United States the following year. Credited with boosting ticket sales wherever she performed, she died in New Jersey in 1915. (By John Osborne)
