Gibbons, Alexander Severus

Dickinson class of 1846 and a University of Maryland trained doctor, Gibbons entered a life of service as a Methodist minister soon after graduation. A Virginian, he was a missionary in the California goldfields, a college professor, and secretary of the Methodist Missionary Society. He was elected president of the University of the Pacific soon after its opening in 1857 and served again from 1873 to 1878.
