FRANKLIN COUNTY, situated on the southerly boundary of Pennsylvania. Area, 734 square miles. Face of the country diversified with mountains, hills, and valleys; soil varied, consisting principally of two formations; one of slate, extending through the northwesterly part, and is much more of a productive soil. Seat of justice, Hambersburgh. Pop. in 1810, 23,083; in 1820, 31,192; in 1830, 35,103; in 1840, 37,739; in 1850, 39,904. (Fanning's, 1853)
