CUMBERLAND COUNTY, situated toward the southwest part of Maine with the Atlantic ocean on the southeast, and watered by Saco, Androscoggin, and Kennebec rivers. Area, 990 square miles. Face of the country, somewhat varied, being much indented by bays on the seaboard, and hilly in the interior; soil productive in pasturage, but generally poor in quality for other purposes. Seat of justice, Portland. Pop. in 1820, 49,445; in 1830, 60,113; in 1840, 68,658; in 1850, 77,549. (Fanning's, 1853)
