Centre County, PA

CENTRE COUNTY, situated in the central part of Pennsylvania, with the west branch of Susquehanna river on the northwest. Area, 1,560 square miles. Face of the country, mountainous and hilly; soil generally rocky and sterile, but much good land along the streams. Seat of justice, Bellefonte. Pop. in 1820, 13 786; in 1830, 16,765; in 1840, 20,492; in 1850, 23,355. (Fanning's, 1853)
