YATES COUNTY, situated toward the westerly part of New York, with Seneca lake on the east, and Crooked lake on the south. Area, 320 square miles. Face of the country, hilly; soil, fertile. Seat of justice, Penn Yan. Pop. in 1820, 11,025; in 1830, 19,019; in 1840 20,444; in 1850, 80,590. (Fanning's, 1853)
