Broome County, NY

BROOME COUNTY, situated on the south boundary of New York, and traversed by Susquehanna river. Length, 43 miles; mean breadth, 20, with an area of 860 square miles. The face of the country is hilly, and the soil generally productive. Seat of justice, Binghamton, which is connected with Utica by the Chenango canal. Pop. in 1820, 14,343; in 1830, 17,749; in 1840, 22,338; in 1850, 30,660. (Fanning's, 1853)
