Speaker Schuyler Colfax of Indiana gavels the first House session of the Thirty-ninth Congress of the United States to a close in Washington, DC. The Congress has sat for a total of 237 days so far and has made history with its proposal on June 13, 1866 of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, intended to secure the rights of former slaves and provide equal protection under the law for all citizens.
