WHAT WE HAVE TO EXPECT. – The fiendish malignity of the North continues to manifest itself. The Republican, a Lincoln paper in Washington, says there can be no peace except upon the unqualified submission of the South – no recognition and no peaceable separation – nothing but coercion; the leaders to be driven out of the country or be hanged.
The N. Y. Times too, (and no other New York paper had come here by mail for eight days till Saturday last) says that “it is about time, now, that Virginia, magnificent Virginia, with her glorious climate, her exuberantly fertile soil, her infinite mineral resources, and her splendid commercial and manufacturing facilities, should be opened up for the occupation and settlement of free white men.” And the Times goes on at great length to dilate upon the rich prize which it thus offers to the cupidity of the robbers and murderers who swarm in that city and who are thus incited to cut the throats of the present inhabitants, white and black, of Virginia, and to appropriate their property. It is plain that the South has to fight these wretches for life and property, as well as political rights. There is to be no quarter. Let them come on.
