You Don’t Know the People of Ohio.
The Buffalo Commercial, in speaking of the Habeas Corpus case now pending before the Supreme Court of our State, says:
Should the Court decide it (the Fugitive Law) unconstitutional, the disgrace of such a decision will drive away an equal number of sensible, law-abiding and moderate men.
Let the Supreme Court of Ohio unanimously decide against the constitutionality of that infamous act, and the Republican party will sweep Ohio cleaner of African Democracy than it has ever yet been swept. We hope to see our Court take that stand, and lead the Judiciary of the States in a judicial reform that surely will, sooner or later, come. We fear the Court will not so decide; we hope it may, for our lawyers must show less love for precedents and must relax their cast-iron obedience to political decisions of the Federal Court.
