Gen. Banks.
We are gratified at finding in the Port Hudson news as communicated to a Cincinnati paper, that Gen. BANKS completed the reduction of that stronghold and received its capitulation, without the aid of reinforcements from Gen. GRANT. It might have detracted somewhat from the glory of his triumph if he had owed any part of it to the flushed legions that captured Vicksburgh. And these latter heroes needed no new honors or laurels.
As it stands, crowned with the capture of Port Hudson, the military career of Gen. BANKS is a marvel of success, considered in reference to the paucity of his forces, the wisdom of his plans, the completeness of his combinations, and the celerity of his movements. He will return now to New Orleans, more than ever master of the position, prepared to reassert, almost undisputed, the military away he had previously established over Louisiana, and by his experienced and practical statesmanship, to restore that rich and important State to the Union.
