PLAQUEMINE PARISH, situated at the southeast extremity of Louisiana, on the Gulf of Mexico, including the main embouchure of the Mississippi. Area, 2,500 square miles. Face of the country low and level; soil, where arable, fertile. Seat of justice, Fort Jackson. Pop. in 1810 1,549; in 1820, 2,354; in 1830, 4,489; in 1840, 5,060; in 1850, 7,390. (Fanning's, 1853)
