Slaughter, Charles

Charles Slaughter was born in Virginia around 1819. He enlisted in the 2nd United States Colored Cavalry in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania on February 10, 1865 as a substitute at forty-six years old. He was five feet and five inches tall with black hair, eyes, and complexion. The 2nd US Colored Cavalry trained at Fort Monroe, Virginia until May1864. During that summer, Slaughter’s regiment fought at Swift Creek on May 8, Fort Darling on May 10, Petersburg on June 16, and Deep Bottom on July 27. The 2nd also participated in the battle of Chaffin’s Farm on September 29 and the battle of Fair Oaks on October 27. Slaughter was discharged from service on June 8, 1865. He was buried in Riverview Cemetery in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. (By Brenna McKelvey)
