State-wide elections in the state of Maine registered large gains for the Republican Party. In a heavy voter turn-out, they took all state offices with increased majorities. Israel Washburn, Jr. was easily elected as the state's 29th governor beating Democrat Ephraim K. Smart. (By John Osborne)
