John Hamilton was born in Virginia around 1820 and served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. According to his service records, Hamilton worked as a laborer before he joined Company B of the 43rd USCT on February 25, 1864 in Meadville, Pennsylvania. His regiment participated in several engagements in Virginia during 1864, including the Battle of the Wilderness in May and the Battle of Petersburg in July. Hamilton was sent to a hospital in City Point, Virginia on August 14, 1864. Eventually Hamilton was transferred to Summit House, a general hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While Hamilton received permission for a furlough in March 1865, he was officially discharged on May 30 he. (By Don Sailer)
