In New Jersey, the state capital Trenton elects its first Republican mayor

The municipal elections in Trenton, the state capital of New Jersey, resulted in a government divided between the two main parties.  Iron manufacturer William R. McKean was elected the first ever Republican mayor of the city while Democrats succeeded in the ward and city council elections.  McKean served till 1863 when a Democrat Franklin S. Mills was elected fro a second time.  McKean died in June1864, aged 62.
