Brigadier-General George Strong commanded the lead brigade assaulting the Confederate installations on Morris Island in South Carolina at dusk on July 18, 1863. His command, which included the African-American 54th Massachusetts, was thrown back with heavy losses and Strong was wounded by shellfire. His wounds became infected at the hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina, and he died twelve days after the battle. He was promoted posthomously to Major-General and buried in Brooklyn, New York.
