Under artillery cover, a 10,000 man Union force commanded by General Joseph Hooker attacked the four Confederate brigades under General Carter L. Stevenson holding the strongpoint above Chattanooga, Tennessee known as Lookout Mountain. After fighting that incurred surprisingly light casualties - just 400 Union men and around 1200 Confederates killed, wounded, or captured - the Confederate troops made a fighting retreat from the fog shrouded mountain as night fell.
