In the continuing hostilities in Nebraska and Colorado called the Cheyenne War, around a hundred warriors attacked an eleven wagon train at Plum Creek in present-day Phelps County, Nebraska in the early morning hours. Eleven men were killed and nineteen-year old Nancy Morton was carried off into a months-long captivity. The war ended at the disastrous massacre of the Cheyenne at Sand Creek later in the year.
