Former Whig Charles Jones Jenkins had run as the only gubernatorial candidate in the November 15, 1865 election arranged under the recent State Convention. By the time he was inaugurated the newly elected state legislature had already voted to ratify the Thirteenth Amendment. Jenkins' tenure lasted till 1868, during which time he clashed with federal authorities to the extent that for a time a military governor replaced him and he fled the state. (By John Osborne)
